There are going to be times when you do everything right — when you make the right decisions, when you take the right steps — and are going to get screwed over anyway. You didn’t do anything wrong. You couldn’t have planned for this to happen. But it did. And there’s nothing you can do to change it. The only thing you’re in control of is how you react to the situation, how you bounce back from whatever you were put through, how you choose to move forward.
Do you start hating the world, hating yourself, hating everyone around you? Do you self-destruct, spiral, throw away all of your hard work because you’re filled with so much rage? Or do you make the best of your situation? Do you decide you aren’t going to let your predicament get you down for long and keep chugging along, keep moving forward, keep your hopes high?
The harsh truth is, no matter what you do, no matter how perfect you are, no matter how much you plan or overthink, sometimes you’re going to get screwed over. Instead of letting that scare you, you should let it comfort you.
After all, this means that you shouldn’t be too upset with yourself when your world is flipped upside down, because some things are completely out of your control. Some things aren’t your fault. You aren’t to blame. You aren’t a failure. You didn’t deserve for this to happen to you. It just happened.
In a way, understanding that shitty things are bound to happen to you is inspirational. It’s why you shouldn’t spend your entire life inside of your comfort zone. It’s why you should push yourself to take risks. It’s why you should follow your heart, follow your dreams, follow your gut, because even if you do all the ‘right’ things, there’s still a chance you could end up in a shitty situation. You might as well do what makes you happiest. You might as well reach for the stars and see where you land.
The truth is, your life isn’t always going to go the way you planned. You’re going to need to be flexible. You’re going to need to find ways to recover when you go through a heartache or a failure or a loss. You’re going to need to figure out how you can grow from what’s happened to you.
As hard as it is to hear, sometimes you’re going to get screwed over. Sometimes you’re going to get disappointed. Sometimes you’re going to get stuck in a situation you never deserved to be in.
