Charlie Munger lives by a philosophy of taking responsibility for all things that happen to him. Even after a botched cataract surgery he didn’t blame the doctor. He blamed himself.
There was a better surgical procedure available that Munger’s doctor knew about, but wasn’t qualified to do. Instead of informing Munger about the newer method he did the older, less effective one that he knew how to do. Instead of blaming the doctor for not telling him about the other method, Munger blamed himself for not doing his own homework on the subject.
That’s hard to do. But Munger says that mentality has served him well, of never thinking of himself as a victim and instead striving to improve himself.
