Describing Things As They Are: Sadness

Sad playlist huh!, sad song or song sad

I think there’s a sadness in everyone, somewhere deep within, under those beautifully crafted facades, hiding between the cracks in your smile.

It’s nestled in a cave somewhere in between your last joke and your first shriek.

I used to believe that sorrow only held hands with those who haven’t yet felt the grasp of joy, but now I understand, it isn’t that simple.

The first time I laid down, sad, I couldn’t understand how somebody like me was capable of such disheartening emotions.

I didn’t know that I, someone who can’t help but smile at every little thing, someone who only knows to be kind and loving, could reach a point this low.

But it didn’t feel new. Rather, I felt as if I had brushed off the dust from an old favourite book, it was so familiar, almost nostalgic.

Maybe sorrow doesn’t find us, maybe it has been in us all along, walking with us every step of the way, and when the time comes, it grazes our fingers ever so gently and wraps them together with its own, intertwined in its cold, bleak grasp.

Maybe don’t push it away, treat it like an old friend you can’t connect with anymore.

Acknowledge its presence and slowly unhook your fingers from it and keep moving forward. It will come back as most old friends do.

But darling, or brother,  you’ve let it go once, which means you can do it,

again.
